Psychedelics: What They Are and Why They\u2019re Nothing New<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before getting into the different types of psychedelics, their effects, and therapeutic applications, it\u2019s worth establishing the basics. Because \u201cpsychedelic\u201d is often used as a catch-all term, even though not every mind-altering substance works in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, during the 20th century, substances such as LSD and psilocybin entered laboratories and psychiatric practices, until legal restrictions put the brakes on a large part of the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, psychedelics are back on the table. Not because they are magical, but because science is trying to understand whether some of them could help, under medical supervision, with mental health conditions<\/strong> where conventional treatments do not always work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Psychedelics Act on the Brain Without Putting on a Lab Coat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The brain doesn\u2019t have a button labeled \u201ctrip mode,\u201d but some psychedelics can interact with systems involved in mood, perception, and the way we connect ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Psychedelics 101, this is known as \u201cset and setting.\u201d The \u201cset\u201d refers to a person\u2019s internal state:<\/strong> their mood, fears, expectations, and emotional situation. The \u201csetting\u201d is the place,<\/strong> the people around them, the atmosphere, and how safe the environment feels. The same psychedelic substance can feel very different in a calm environment compared with a chaotic setting filled with noise, pressure, or people you don\u2019t trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
